Swine flu – the deadly disease
Since claiming its first reported victim back in April in Mexico, the deadly disease has caused a number of deaths around the world. The global toll, according to the World Health Organization is close to 1500 with maximum number of casualties reported in the United States, Canada and Australia.
Although a cause of relief for experts around the world has been that the virus is not known to be mutating into a more dangerous species but a few people who lost their lives recently have been reported of being infected by a virus that is believed to be resistant to the most commonly available medicine against swine flu, tamiflu.
The cases of swine flu around the globe have also shown an alarming rise with thousands of new people getting infected every day.
According to latest estimates, more than 170 countries in the world have reported the H1N1 virus infection with most of them suffering several deaths off swine flu.
Swine flu deaths in India
The country reported its first swine flu victim on August 3, when 14 year old girl named Reeda Shaikh succumbed to the deadly virus in Pune. Since then, a large number of people have shown swine flu symptoms and a few unfortunate ones have sadly lost the battle against this highly contagious disease.
In India, swine flu deaths have so far been reported in Pune, Bangalore, Nashik, Ahmedabad, Vadodara, Thane, Chennai, Thiruvananthapuram and Chennai . So far the country has seen over 20 deaths off swine flu with Pune being the worst affected city with more than half of the deceased.
With swine flu deaths in India showing a steady rise with each passing day, there has been a rush of people with swine flu symptoms waiting to get themselves tested at the laboratories.
According to some estimates, if things do not improve soon, the number of swine flu infected people could touch three billion around the world.
